How do you teach a toddler to count?
Have you ever seen parents ask their toddler some profound maths question and their child answer? Well chances are the child has just memories the response (like this scene in modern family). Albeit, impressive a toddler may be able to memorise impressive facts, they actually have no understanding or concept of their answer. This FREE printable is a fun way to begin teaching your toddler early counting skills.
There is actually an entire 5 step principle behind learning to count. I won't bore you with it but can you read more about it here. But the first step in learning to count is simply reciting the numbers. So encourage your toddler to count toys, books, stairs, buttons... anything really!
It wasn't until I started teaching I realised just how complicated numbers really are! There is a whole process behind learning to count, number recognition and connecting the two!
How these printables can help toddlers learn to count to 10
I have created these worksheets to begin the process of linking the written version of the number with the concept of counting. On the sheet itself, they can colour in each animal and number and start to link '2' as two of something.
You can also trace over the letter with pen. But personally we like to trace over with small objects. For example, grab a handful of cheerios and lining them over the number. I have done this before with Albie by just writing out the numbers too. However, by using these free printables you can also count the animal photos to further cement their understanding.
Should my toddler know how to count?
No, not at all. I am a huge believer of learning through play and being led by the child themselves. However, my child just loves to learn, so I created these worksheets as an activity to do together. You do not need to sit your toddler down and force them to do maths worksheets... This is just a fun activity to do and hopefully learn along the way!
