How to make money on Vinted

Like thousands of others, we unexpectadley found ourselves in financial crisis as payments increased. Christmas was also becoming ever closer, I became highly anxious about being able to afford everything. I have been an avid Vinted user since 2020, so I decided to bite the bullet and make money on Vinted myself.

Can you really make money on vinted?

Yes! We have made around £400 in total! I have ADHD so became slightly fixated on selling things. Even things for a couple of pounds, it so quickly adds up. I have learnt a few tricks along the way and there are certainly hacks to sell things faster. I find it much easier than Ebay though as Vinted take control of shipping costs. There are also no hidden fees for sellers. Vinted make its money by adding a 'protection fee' to each item bought. Plus you can 'spotlight' your wardrobe, I tried this and you can read how it went here.

What do I need to make money on vinted?

It can be a little time-consuming as you have to list each item. However, vinted helps to speed this process up by suggesting sizes, colours, categories etc. You don't need a printer, however, you will sell more if you do. Lots of the carriers offer a print-in-shop option. But this limits the number of carriers you can use.

Things you will need:

  • Camera phone
  • Items to sell
  • Packing bags. We bought some for amazon as we sell lots. But people often use carrier bags turned inside out or even bin bags!

How to get started: it is all in the picture

Especially as the items are second hand, people are going to sceptical about the quality of the item. Make sure to photograph in a light space with natural daylight. I find items sell better when they are hung up and well-presented. Make sure not to have any clutter in the background of your pictures. As a buyer, I want to make sure I am buying something from a clean home! Make sure to take several different pictures from different angles. I make sure to do the item from the front, back and a close-up of any details or patterns. Not only are you showing off the garment, but the buyer will be on your profile for longer whilst they flick through your pictures which gives them longer to consider buying and boosts your item for other buyers.

Use as many key words as possible!

Using as many words in the description is essential for making money on vinted. If you have a t-shirt from h&m and list it as 'girls t-shirt h&m' you are only going to get hits when people search those three words. They are also pretty generic so will be more saturated, pushing your item to the bottom quicker. Instead, try 'girl's short sleeve t-shirt / top from h&m. Navy and white horizontal stripes / stripey pattern with a small pocket on the chest'. Now, your item will be seen under more searches. Sometimes at the bottom of the description, I will tag lots of words related to my item to increase its reach. Just like how you would hashtag on Twitter or Instagram!

How much can I upload to Vinted?

As far as I am aware, there is no limit. Or at least, I have never hit it and I have had hundreds on there before! However, there is a strategy to uploading. Personally, I find it much more beneficial to upload a few items a day rather than uploading it all once. The reason for this is you can filter your search to show the 'newest' items uploaded. When someone clicks on your item they can see your other uploads and create a bundle. This means you are going to get people viewing your profile each day which will increase your reach! (I never realised quite how similar selling on Vinted is to running a social media page!)

I even buy to resell! I can do more on this in another blog. But you can get an idea of the profits here:

What price should I set?

One thing Vinted is known for is you can find some right bargains! Unless you have something limited edition, you probably aren't going to earn a massive amount from each item. I ALWAYS put my items up for a few pounds more than I actually want for them. For example, if I have a t-shirt which I would like £3 for, I list it for £5. Then anyone who likes my item I will then offer it to them for less. People will always try to haggle for the best price, so if you go in high and they haggle down, you haven't lost anything.

When you upload an item Vinted will often give you a suggested amount you should charge for an item. I take this with a pinch of salt. Do your own research before if you are totally unsure. But I have had items which are recommend at £2 go for £20 before!

Making money on Vinted quickly adds up

I remember how shocked I was when we made out first £50! Every little item adds up really quickly. I love the saying, "ones mans trash is anothers treasure'. You really can sell everything on Vinted, toys, clothes, books, homeware! I have a million and one more Vinted hacks to share, which I can do in another post! It takes two minutes to upload so go go go!
