Why should I join No Spend January?
No spend January is quite literally what it sounds like... no excess spending in January. I aim to only spend on essentials next month and hopefully save some money! You can read more about the rules here.
If you are a bit of a spend-o-holic like me, No Spend January might sound a little daunting. But I have put together some of my favourite tips and tricks on how to get through the month!
Don't keep No Spend January to yourself!
Keeping up wth friends and family can be expensive! You're more likely to spend more on whim if your friends don't know you are trying to save. Instead, be open about your no spend month. Since telling my family, most of them have decided to join me in the challenge! Now we are all finding free activities to do together! For example, our normal New Years Day walk is usually finished off by a trip to the cafe for a hot chocolate and cake. However, this year we are bringing a flask and some goodies (either baked or leftover from xmas). Saving money can actually be fun for everyone!
Write yourself a WANT list
I have a list on my notes in my phone of things I want! This is literally a list of all the things I would buy if I had the infinite finances to do so. Keeping a list of things I want means when I do have a a little extra saved I can splurge on something I really want. Also, I have found I will add something to the list, and after a week... or even a day... I am totally over it. It stops those impulse splurges and means you are spending money on something you actually really want!
Go through all your outgoings and keep a spreadsheet
I do this every.single.month. I won't lie, some months I put it off because I know its been a spendy month. In fact, I am dreading looking at December. But it is really important you know exactly where your money is going. You might find a random subscription you forgot to cancel or (like me) realise you spend way too much on your food shopping each month! I keep categories of every single spend, ie, food out, food shopping, bus tickets etc.
Join our Facebook group!
I have set up a No Spend January group on Facebook so we can help keep each other motivated and accountable! Don't worry, you wont be banished if you have a cheeky Costa one day! The group is just about supporting each other make better financial choices and keeping on track.
Keep yourself busy so you don't spend!
You might have seen my No Spend January calendar. There are 31 days worth of activities to keep yourself busy and declutter your life a little too! I don't know about you... but when I am bored I open that amazon app! So a big part of my No Spend January is to keep busy!
