Can I Spend at all during No Spend January?
Yes... I haven't lost my mind I promise! Of course, you need to do some spending in January. Everyone should complete two lists. 'Essentials' and 'Non-Essentials'. Everyone's lists will look different. For example, bills, travel costs, medical costs - would be essential spends for some people. But the idea of No Spend Jan is to cut out all the non-essential spending. Everything else? It’s on pause. Think eating out, impulse purchases, or that random late-night Amazon order.
The goal isn’t deprivation—it’s intentionality. You’ll save money, reflect on your spending habits, and prove to yourself that joy isn’t tied to your bank account.

Common Questions
“What if I have a birthday in January?”
This is one of the most popular questions we get. Personally, I have two January birthdays to celebrate—my grandma’s and my best friend’s! I include these under essential spends because spending time with loved ones is non-negotiable for me.
But here’s the thing: you can still save in other areas. Maybe you opt for a thoughtful homemade gift or celebrate with a cozy night in rather than an expensive outing. The goal is to cut back where it’s realistic while still prioritizing meaningful moments.
“Can I buy food and pay bills?”
Of course! Essentials like food, bills, and housing aren’t going anywhere. What No Spend January targets are the non-essentials. Think takeaway coffee, unnecessary subscriptions, or that cute-but-not-totally-needed sweater.
No one’s asking you to skip rent or go hungry! This challenge is about resetting and reevaluating—not creating hardship.
“I’m not sure I can commit…”
That’s okay! Not everyone jumps straight into No Spend January. We have plenty of members in the group who opt for Low Spend January instead. Maybe you cut back on just one or two spending categories, like eating out or shopping.
Every little bit counts, and the savings add up! Plus, trying even a low-spend version of the challenge can give you insight into your spending habits.
Why No Spend January?
For me, it’s about pressing the reset button after Christmas. By December, I’ve usually fallen into the trap of overindulging—both with treats and my money. No Spend January helps me prove to myself that I can step away from those dopamine hits of shopping and find contentment in the simple things.
